Truck brakes started making grinding sounds under braking yesterday, then later at a stoplight seemed to stay engaged after taking my foot off the pedal. I assumed the pads went, but the sticking terrified me. It’s going to the shop later. Thoughts?

Slide pins?

Would that explain the grinding too?

I’m not saying it does but it certainly could.

Yes and no.
Sticking slide pins won’t cause a grinding sound directly, but they could prematurely wear out the pads until you have metal-on-metal contact, which would certainly cause grinding.

Bad caliper? Happens.

Generally there would be enough hydraulic pressure (assuming assisted brakes) to overcome a stuck slide pin, no? I’m calling caliper piston itself.

Not if the slide-pins are really rusted. They should be re-greased at each brake job to prevent this from happening. “Pad-slaps” (only throwing new pads on and calling that a brake job) are sloppy.

How old is it/how old are the pads?
If it’s metal on metal maybe they’re hooking up, but my guess is this is the caliper piston being stuck out - aka bad caliper. I had to replace one on my Milan not that long ago and the guy at Advance Auto jokingly said, we’ll keep the other side rear caliper on hold for you for when that one goes out haha. It happens and if that’s the biggest flaw in my car - I’ll take it.

The stuck slide won’t stop the caliper compressing but it won’t make it happy to compress or retract.

An ‘06, and based on a call I made yesterday I don’t think the pads have ever been changed.

That seems to be the collective consensus so far.

Would that happen on a car being driven though? May be making assumptions, but it sounds like the trunk described isn’t sitting. I’ll keep that in mind about the slide pins though. Never touch the pins when doing brakes.

I’m not really sure how it happens, but I’ve seen them seize up even with the dust boots still intact. You’d think that that would keep the grease in, and everything else out.
I once had a caliper lock up, and couldn’t figure out how. I KNEW that I had greased the pins well during the last brake job, but I was running out of ideas and decided to pull it apart anyway. I found one of the pins completely dry and rusty.
I’ll never know for sure, but I suspect that I might have put the wrong grease in there during a previous brake job. I always save any leftover packets of grease (like the kind that come with suspension/steering parts), even if it’s only half of a packet. Maybe I chose to use up one of those, and it wasn’t good for high-temp applications...

Probably a stuck caliper. Happens on my ‘06 Sierra every year or two. The pins need to be cleaned/greased.

One thing I didn’t find out until recently is that if brake clean hits the rubber on the slide pins, don’t know if all slide pins have it but mine does down near the end of the pin a little rubber sleeve, the rubber expands just enough to make the pins not work right, could’ve been that. I know this because I accidentally got some on there and had to replace the slide pins/rubber sleeves lol

omg since 2006?!
WAAAAY too long.
Though I will say mine is a 07 and I had a bad caliper and I do brakes pretty consistently on it.

yea, it can happen.
i had a rear caliper pin freeze on me, went through brake pads so fast that within a year, the pads were gone, and the bare metal backing was rubbing on the disk....

Much worse, ejected the pad entirely. Destroyed the rotor and caliper.

Definitely no bueno, piston on rotor is rather destructive to both.

Yeah, I imagine so.
